International Elementary prepares for Racial Justice Action Week

Celebrating History, Building the Future: International Elementary Takes Action!

This February, our students are doing more than just looking back at history—they are actively working to shape a more equitable future.

In a powerful intersection of Black History Month and Racial Justice Action Week, our classrooms have transformed into hubs of research, advocacy, and global citizenship.

Bridging History and Global Goals

To honor the legacy of Black leaders and activists, our grade five students are diving deep into the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By focusing on goals such as Reduced Inequalities (Goal 10) and Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions (Goal 16), students are connecting the historical fight for civil rights to modern-day global challenges.

Empowering Inquiry: The IB Connection

This initiative is a living example of the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) in action. Our students are moving beyond the "what" and "when" of history to explore the "how" and "why" of social change. This project directly aligns with the PYP mission by:

  • Developing IB Learners: Students are acting as Inquirers and Thinkers, analyzing complex global issues with a critical eye.

  • Fostering Global-Mindedness: By researching the SDGs, students recognize their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet.

  • Encouraging Meaningful Action: A core pillar of the PYP is student-initiated action. This week, students aren't just learning—they are collaborating on real-world solutions to promote racial justice.

What’s Happening in the Classrooms?

Our young changemakers are working in collaborative teams to:

  • Research: Investigating Black trailblazers in science, politics, and the arts who have paved the way for sustainable progress.

  • Collaborate: Sharing ideas on how to address systemic barriers and promote racial equity within our own community.

  • Create: Developing presentations and action plans that propose local solutions to global issues.

Why This Matters

By studying the SDGs through the lens of racial justice, students are learning that true sustainability is impossible without equity. This initiative encourages them to see themselves not just as students, but as global citizens with the agency to drive change.

"Justice is never an accident. It is always a result of high intention, sincere effort, and intelligent execution."

Stay Tuned! We invite parents and community members to join us to celebrate their action projects on Friday, February 13th from 5-6pm. We will be showcasing the students' final projects and their visions for a more just world.
